ABOUT MAJIC BRAND

MCA 2009

Pill Boxes, Ball Vases & Orange Vases -as veritable newcomers to the magic trade we come with a high sense of style and design.  Our work with Pill Boxes and Ball Vases goes back only a few years but we've built our designs on a legacy and a tradition that is centuries old.  With our craftsmanship being Old World, we do not sacrifice quantity for quality - at Majicbrand Woodturning; we make only a few Vases each year.
We select only the finest kiln dried hardwoods.  Currently we have American Black Cherry available for the 3" size Pill Box.  Also, on hand, we carry Curly Maple to make the 2" Pill Box.  The woods we use are not consistently available in the size we need for the Pill Boxes.  Black Walnut is a choice material, but it is currently out of stock.

Upon finding good quality material, we buy it. Black Birch, Flame Birch, Masur Birch, Hickory and Ash are all quality hard woods that we will use for Ball Vases and Pill Boxes. If a dark feature is needed, we use ebony - a white accent - we use Mammoth Ivory.  Occasionally, we will find exotic wood in the size we need for a Pill Box.  Generally, we find Cocobolo Rosewood, Brazilian Rosewood, East Indian Rosewood in the sizes we need for a 2" Pill Box. It is not often that we find apiece big enough for a 3" Pill Box.  Discovering these for sale is truly extraordinary, as they are unique and rare.

When planning a box, we expect that the size of the wood blank will include enough wood for the shell and both parts of the vase. It is important to match the grain across the joint between the Vase Bottom and the Vase Lid.  By making the shell from the same piece of wood, it is more likely to match the color of the vase - as well as have the same working properties. This is our standard.

At Majicbrand we hand turn all of our pieces on a wood lathe. We carefully fit the shell halves into both parts of the vase. Then we finish the painted pieces with spray enamel and lacquer the natural color vase parts. This is followed by rubbing out the finish by hand on all pieces. This process gives the work a velvety feel that is a pleasure to touch. Often that means the inside of the shells are finished, as well as the inside of both parts of the Vase. Additionally, we take the time to, not only turn the bottom of the base but also lacquer it and hand-rub the finish. It has long been the standard that the vase bottoms get little or no attention. Here at Majicbrand we are very proud of our Pill Boxes and Ball Vases - and the effort that goes into making them.

We hope that you will be satisfied with our pieces and proud to add them to your collection.
